Have you ever heard of a woman named Kathleen Casey-Kirschling?
No?
Me, neither, until this caught my eye, but now the poor woman has me conjuring images of Godzilla in Tokyo.
You see, poor Kathleen has the dubious honor of having been identified as America's "First Baby Boomer", and she is someone to be feared. (Bwaaaa haaa haaa!)
Having been born one second after midnight on the 1st of January in... more
The corners around here are clogging up, so I'm taking some time today to sift through the geezer-related stuff for Sunday blog material.
Starting off with a shortage of silver, and I'm not talking hair here, as we have plenty of that, but rather the the anniversary that doesn't make it as often as many would like.
Turns out that more than half of the couples in the US that should have celebrated a 25th wedding... more
“Anita did more than run a successful ethical business: she was a pioneer of the whole concept of ethical and green consumerism,” Tony Juniper, director of Friends of the Earth, wrote in The Evening Standard on Tuesday. “There are quite a few business people today who claim green credentials, but none came anywhere near Anita in terms of commitment and credibility.”
Again this week, like last, I find myself needing to laud a hero of the... more
Or, more accurately, do Boomers think Heaven is an option at the end of the trail?
According to an article in the latest edition of AARP Magazine, most Americans over fifty ... 73% ... believe in life after death, and 86% of those figure Heaven is a likely destination, even though only 70% would say the same about hell.
Although many in our generation looked askance at the Pearly Gates during our youth, something about passing the half-century mark has a lot of Boomers rethinking... more
Back in July I wrote about the finalists that had made it through the $10,000 award segment of the Purpose Prize, an award that honors older Americans working to solve social problems in creative and innovative ways.
This week, the winners were announced, five of them, each receiving $100,000.

Feeling like the pressures of parenthood are mounting?
Tired of struggling to stay awake with a new infant night after night?
Need a break?
Well, if you are in Australia ... or ready to pack up for a trip down under ... you, too, can join other mothers at the new $8 million, five-star "mother's retreat" in the Lavender Bay area of Sydney.
For a mere $1300 (US... more
Does the act of dropping to the floor cause a racket of clacking, pops and creaks not unlike a fierce game of mahjong on a three-legged table?
Is every dip of the hips accompanied by an exhale that sounds way too much like old Uncle Merv lowering himself into his Baralounger?
If once you've actually placed yourself on floor level, does the chance of remaining there for the rest of your days seem a definite possibility?
Yeah ... I know ... me, too.
One of the great things about being an older adoptive parent is the fact... more
Anyone traveling soon might want to brush up a bit on the problem of deep vein thrombosis, venous thromboembolism (VTE), since the WHO just issued warnings again in its Research Into Global Hazards of Travel project.
Referring back to the first of today's posts, the WHO says, "Travellers can take "common-sense" measures to reduce the risks of contracting... more
As I was settling down into my hammock, book in hand but eyelids heavy, the thought drifted across my mind that napping would be a good blog topic for the day.
I've always been fond of the mid-day snooze, so it's not a geezer-inspired activity ... activity? ... in my case. I recall coming home from high school and stretching out for half and hour or so, happily dropping off and waking refreshed and ready for whatever teen festivities might present.
All these years later, and a daily dip into... more
A couple of stories in the news about older parents need talking about today.
The first, this one that asks the question, "How old is too old?".
It's grandparents raising a child this time, and they must not have been spring chicken-ish when the son who is dad to the little one was little, as they're now 89 and 86, and have been parenting the child off and on almost since birth a... more
