Adoptees: Positives

Thanks to suggestions from readers I've started posting some questions and answers on older parents. The introduction is here, followed by embarrassment and negatives here.

SHB:
Adopted by older parents as you were, what do you see as the positives aspects of older parent adoptions?

Kris:
My parents were totally committed to being parents, financially secure and ready in every way for a family by the time I was adopted. There has never been a moment in my life when I didn't know without a doubt that I was loved and treasured. I think that's very positive.

Mickey:
One really great thing happened when I reunited with my birth mom about 10 years ago. She was only 38 at the time, having had me when she was really young, and that made it very easy for me to develop a good relationship with her. It might have been harder if she and my mom were closer to the same age, as I think I would have felt torn, but because she was young we were able to bond on a totally different level. Now we all get together often, me, my mom and my birth mom, and it's like we all fit together like three generations of one family.

Kath:
My mom is the greatest mom in the world, and I can't imagine being raised by anyone else. Her age is part of who she is, so it's as positive a thing as anything else about her.

Claire:
If my parents hadn't adopted me, I would be dead. That's a positive, I think.

SHB:
What advice would you give to older people considering adoption?

Kris:
Go for it! If it feels right, and you feel good, why not?

Mickey:
Make as sure as you can that you're healthy.

Kath:
Go for it.

Claire:
If I could wave a wand and make my parents younger, I would. But I can't. Sometimes I wish they could have adopted me when they were younger, but then I wouldn't have been born yet and they would have adopted someone else instead.

Thanks much to everyone who participated in this exchange, best wishes for the future, and a high-five to your folks! I'd be happy to hear more thoughts on the topic, so feel free to comment here or email me: olderparentadoptblog@adoptionmail.com .
