I looked into cloth diapers for about, oh....a minute. I pretty much felt like Lisa explained.....beteeen the increased laundry on an already vastly expanding laundry front, the extra work for DH and I, the hot water, the bleach and the soap it just seemed like a LOT of output for only a little gain on the green side.

A cop-out? Maybe....but one I sure am happy to live with :)

The only part of un-potty trained that I really disliked was sticky unformed poop. No matter how hard you try, there is no dainty way to clean that up.

My grandson (potty trained)was playing ice hockey at 5. He rushed off the ice one time and dashed for the mens room. When I got in there he was doing the chicken dance and yelling "Number 2, number2". Hockey players wear a lot of gear. It was a mighty effort, but ultimately it all came to crap.
OK, let's do the environmental math. Disposables vs hot (energy) water (disappearing from the earth) and soap (terrible polluter). Are disposables really that much worse?

I though about cloth diapers for Ella for a wee while and then remembered my first two in cloth and well, that was that.
My commitment to cloth diapers and "reusable" wipes lasted about two weeks. I can't believe we lasted even that long, what with a newly-arrived baby with intestinal distress. Ugh.
I am now at least trying to dump the poop from the disposable diaper into the toilet, since that's the recommended disposal method. Previously I was wrapping up the diapers and waste in individual disposable bags - wrong on so many levels! The shame finally got to me.

fenyimom,
make that three for your side. Just the thought of all that laundry and making and remaking the bed is enough to make me green (not the environmentally friendly shade)... my daughter wore pullups until she was 7 and refused to wear them any more. I feel a twinge of guilt because I didn't even pause to consider the environmental impact until reading this post, but I just keep in mind how much nicer I have been to my child having been spared from all that bed stripping...
Completely stripping a bed every night, and washing mattress pad, fitted sheet, top sheet, blanket and PJs versus throwing away a pullup every morning..... I know which side I am on.
