I admit when I see an older mom with a young child I get curious.
This morning at K’s
music class, I got to talk with another mom, whom I’ve seen at class. She is in her mid forties, with a three year old boy.(A really cute three year old boy that makes me want a boy too).
Decorum stops me from blatantly asking:
How do you have a child a your age? Did you do in-vetro or adopt?
Of course she could have gotten pregnant the old fashioned way. It’s just
so unusual. It happens, I guess, but all the older moms I know spent a long time getting to be older moms on purpose.
This reminds me of the wedding we were at a few weekends ago.
I had been admiring this oh so gorgeous - flirty with men and woman - fifty year old woman in a home made gauzy dress that only an artistic type could carry off, she said…..
You? A two year old! How funny. S U R P R I S E!
And her head went way, way back, showing off her spinal flexibility as she laughed and laughed. And laughed.
So, I try not to ask questions when I first meet older moms. Or make assumptions. Like SURPRISE!
K certainly wasn’t a surprise. She had
a lot of paperwork that preceded her.
And I had to get
fingerprinted for heavens sake! Not the old fashioned way of building a family.
This music class mom and I talked a while. We both gave up careers to stay at home with our young children. Her son is going to pre-school now, so she may work a bit. I casually mentioned I write for
adoption.com as I have some experience with adoption.
She said,
How great! See you next week.
I guess she didn’t adopt.
She would have said,
Me too! or something I suppose.
The curious mind wants to know.
