www.thebluestar.net.........I can remember distinctly the exact moment I wanted to be a mother……

Hubby and I were at the bar. (That’s what you do when you don’t have kids - at least we did). We were having a nice glass of red wine and some tofu spring rolls with dipping sauce.

Life was good.

Then I asked the big question.

Hubby, would you like to adopt?

Adopt what?

( I can imagine he was thinking of a new Labrador puppy or maybe a street, like you see when you are driving down the highway, Adopted by Church so and so.)

A child. I want to be a mom.

Hubby was speechless.

For about a second or two.

Not really he said.

Then he saw I was serious. You want to adopt?

Yea, I really do. – At least I think I do.

I was scared. Scared of approaching motherhood for the first time in my forties. Scared of the process, scared of the cost, (emotionally and financially).

Scared of what other people might think.

Hubby and I continued to talk.

We agreed the first step was to do a bit of research. (I’d already done a lot of research – but I agreed to do more and bring it to him a bit at a time).

That is when I first found adoption sites on the internet. Like adoption.com forums on adopting, and also foster care resources.

I’m sure blogs existed, but I wasn’t savvy then about blogging or I would have also gone here and here.

I didn't know any adoptive moms, or older moms. I felt alone in my desire and wishful thinking.

My friends had no idea I was interested in adopting. When I finally got around to sharing with one friend, she exclaimed

You adopt? Why whatever for?

hummm.. not exactly a vote of confidence.

Continued soon.....
