So far, motherhood, well, it's been the best decision of my life…..
After I pretty much decided I wanted to be a Mom, Hubby got on board. (He pretty much figured that what I wanted I’d get anyway,) so….
I researched all around the internet, and made a call to our local DHS office, and discovered that foster – adoption went through private agencies here in our county. Now that sounded interesting!
I liked the idea of foster-adoption.
- There was a need in our town for more foster-adopt parents.
There were children available for foster-adoption.
I wanted an open adoption.
I’d like to be able to meet my child first.
I wanted post adoption services.
I wanted information on birth family.
Hubby couldn't take time off to travel that year or the next, so we didn’t want to travel.
- I was concerned about financing an International adoption.
DHS office sent a long list of our local agencies who license for foster adopt. Basically, I just started calling, and the first one who spent a few minutes on the phone with me was the first one I made an appointment with.
The owner and president of the agency, Charlie, came out to my house to visit and go over the program. I knew NOTHING about foster adoption. If you asked me about foster care I would have told you about parents abusing children, Florida loosing children, and families using the system to get extra welfare help.
Boy was I wrong. (mostly anyway).
Charlie went over my list of wants and concerns and at least for me, foster care Foster care seemed perfect!
Hubby, though had different ideas about what was perfect.
He was mostly concerned about his age - forty nine at the time of this first informal meeting. He just kept repeating, I’m too old for this, surely they won’t approve me at my age.
Charlie left our home and promised to put us in touch with other parents in their forties and fifties who adopted.
Before Charlie hit the highway we had a phone call.
Hi, I’m Richard, I’m fifty nine and I’ve just adopted a two year old from foster care.
Our life was about to change!
