Yesterday I met a lovely woman who writes
children’s books for a living. We were both signing our books at the local University bookstore and sharing a table, so there was plenty of time to chat. (University people don’t really buy children’s books or fost-adopt books on their lunch break).
We were chatting away having a lovely time when she asked if I had children.
Yes, I have a two year old daughter.
You do? Her eyes got really big. Big like giant pancakes.
A two year old?
Why I said smiling, do I look like I’m 110 years old.
Noooo , you look like you are about 45 or 46. (I’m 47). I sure wouldn’t want a child at this age. It takes so much energy, I could never keep up, How do you do it? She was a really nice lady but geez, enough with the age thing.
We were about the same age, but she saw herself as old, and tired, and, done with raising children. I don’t blame her. About the raising children thing. But I don’t feel old, just a bit older than I was. That’s all.
She did however send me to some great writers groups around town. Thanks!
At this same book signing, I met another woman – a student, who is interested in adopting. She was in her fifties, and was scared of starting the process at her age. She spent a lot of time asking me questions about how I got started and what the foster care system is like. Age was a factor, but wasn’t going to hold her back from pursuing adopting.
I sent her to the following resources:
Older Parent Adoption Forum
Older Adopting Parent Articles
More Older Parent Adoption Articles
Although I didn’t sell enough books to pay for my gas, it was a fun networking time and I got to talk the adoption talk for a while to some new people.
