If you are in your forties, fifties or beyond, you may wish to adopt an older child. Perhaps you aren’t up to the midnight feedings. Maybe poopy diapers during your board meeting isn't your idea of fun.
Or, Maybe you are single and want a child who is in school while you work.
Whatever your motivation, it is easy to find waiting older children who are adoptable right now – from foster care.
I’ve written about waiting children on my
fost-adopt blog, so you can get caught up more there, but today I’d like to point you to a few resources of photo listings of waiting children.
My favorite photo listing is
The Heart Galleries.
The Heart Gallery
"Photographs can take us to places we have never been, show things we might never see, help us to relate to things we might not be able to understand. Most importantly, they can inspire action."
— Eric Swanson, Heart Gallery photographer
On November 1, 2005 the first National Heart Gallery exhibit opened in Washington, DC. Sponsored by The Adoption Exchange Association and The Collaboration to AdoptUsKids, DHHS and the Ad Council, with the support of several national adoption partners, the National Heart Gallery featured the portraits of waiting children from across the country. The portraits were on display in Union Station’s West Hall and The Russell Senate Office Building Rotunda. This special exhibit helped raise awareness of the 119,000 children currently waiting for a home in the U.S. The national response to this event was tremendous.
You don't need an exhibit near you to adopt a child. You can browse over the internet, and then telephone the caseworker for a child you are interested in. Children can be adopted accross state lines, and caseworkers are happy to give you details about children not published on the web.
