Parenting points deducted for low tech?

I've been writing about some heavy stuff over on the International and News blogs, and can't face more rounds here ... another sign of old age, I suppose.

I will, however, don my tatty old geezer cap and do a 'What the heck is happening to the world?' sort of post, just for the heck of it.

Actually, I am scratching my head over something that started here, then took me here ... against my will, I might add.

What the heck?

Well, lookie here, it's Babble Soft.

Okay.

Web and Mobile software to help keep up with breastfeeding, pumping, bottle feeding, diaper changing, and medicine taking.

You MUST be joking.

But, no. This is for real.

Another 'must have' ... apparently ... that allows parents to "record baby's diaper changing events" and even gives a daily or weekly print-out report.

As one testimonial says, “Baby Manager is very cool! Too bad I am through those periods of time. I sure could have used it (I am a techie, too, but settled with the paper version, although nicely organized in Excel spreadsheets :).”

Am I missing something? Will I be admitting to some horrid lapse in parenting if I mention the fact that I've had four kids and never once even thought of putting together spreadsheets ... Excel, or otherwise ... to keep track of diaper changing "events", or anything thing else having to do with babies?

I have used such high tech tools as thermometers, clocks, pencils and paper, and have been known to jot down times and dosages of meds when treating fevers and flu, but a "baby manager web and mobile software interface you can even export to Excel to do your own analysis"?

For a mere $39.95 ... which includes a 67% savings, although savings over what it doesn't say ... you can purchase a subscription that will give you a year of keeping the whole family up-to-date on diaper events and breast milk pumping times ... so "Grandma, Grandpa, your nanny, or even Aunt Susie can log in and enter information or just see what's new with your baby from anywhere in the world ...".

So, because I don't get this at all ... I am honesty totally baffled by this whole concept and really do find myself thinking that the world is becoming a confusing place an old broad like me can't quite get the hang of if this is actually as important as the website makes it sound ... does this mean I'm too old to be raising kids?

I'm with you Sandra. I don't get it. Do I really want Aunt Susie logging out to find out the lat time I pumped my breasts? I don't think so. That falls into the Too Much Information (TMI) category. Nor do I need to share my child's toileting "events" with everyone else.

If they're that concerned, they can come to my house and change a few diapers. :)

Some times high tech is too much tech.

And what will Aunt Susie have to share? After all, shouldn't information be 'tit for tat'?

(Sorry about that ...)

You're too right about the diapers. If someone wants to share an event, they might as well get the full effect.

I would be happy to share diapering events with anyone willing to dive in and... relieve me, so to speak.

This is for people with nannies, guaranteed. They ought to bundle it with the video monitor you can feed live & streaming to the internet so mom and dad can check in from the office. Did you hear about the NY mom who picked up footage from the space station on one of those? I heard it on NPR, so it must be true.

Huh? As someone with two kids under the belt and a third on the way, I can honestly say that I've never recorded... anything. I vividly remember sitting in the hospital bed after my daughter's birth with the nurse wanting to know details about my daughter's feedings. I'd say I didn't know how much how often. I seriously didn't. She insisted "Ok, would you say every 3 hours?" I dunno. "If you had to guess, would you say every 3 hours?" Hmmmm. Dunno. In the end I told her my daughter nursed for 20 minutes every 3 hours. Heck, it was obviously what she wanted to hear. LOL!

OK, I'll admit, I did write down how much and when my son ate(drank) at first. I was a first time mom and really nervous about that whole "failure to thrive" thing, but I never dreamed of recording "diaper events" or creating spreadsheets! The only spreadsheet I was concerned about was the one for the floor at "tummy time"!

BTW the little guy's ability to thrive was never in question. He's 2 1/2, stands about 3 1/2' tall and weighs 38 pounds.
