Where in the world? Part 2

… as I was saying in my previous post ….

But where?

Cambodia has been a thought, and we're kicking ourselves for not having bought land there a few years back, just as an investment for the kids' futures. It's already starting to get that boom thing happening now, though.

We would love Vietnam, but it's beating Seychelles for onward and upward.

Madagascar is another thought. It's similar to here (same neck of the Indian Ocean woods), aside from the small annoyance of those nasty cyclones it gets whacked with. (We don't have them here ... too close to the Equator to get up any spin.)

As you can see, we prefer developing nations ... the Third World, if you will, although that term is almost as contentious as some titles in adoption ... and would choose to have our kids grow up without much in the way of the real world blitz of stuff and stuff and more stuff and the pressure that comes with.

Europe is out; too cold, too crowded, too developed.

The US has appeal, for me. Mark's not impressed, but I spend a lot of time missing my kids, my granddaughter, my mom, my brothers and their kids and loads of still-close friends. For sure, California wouldn't suit, but America's a big country. There must be some place that could feel like home for me if a move back was necessary. North? South? East? West? Middle?

Money Magazine suggests Fort Collins, CO is the best place in the country to live. Hmmmm. Sounds nice, and I know fellow blogger Michelle loves the state. But ... too cold.

Second place: Overland Park, Kansas. Kansas? Ruby slippers come to mind.

Here's their list of the top twenty-five small cities:

1 Fort Collins, CO 128,000
2 Naperville, IL 141,600
3 Sugar Land, TX 75,800
4 Columbia/Ellicott City, MD 159,200
5 Cary, NC 106,400
6 Overland Park, KS 164,800
7 Scottsdale, AZ 226,000
8 Boise, ID 193,200
9 Fairfield, CT 57,800
10 Eden Prairie, MN 60,600
11 Plano, TX 250,100
12 Eagan, MN 63,700
13 Olathe, KS 112,100
14 West Bloomfield , MI 65,000
15 Richardson, TX 99,200
16 Gilbert, AZ 178,100

Okay. Never heard of many of these, but that doesn't mean anything.

Cary NC is #5 and I live about 30 miles from there...I think anyone who's concerned about overcrowding, keeping-up-with-the-Jones' type attitudes, or the whole idea of premanufactured suburbia should NOT move there. But since I left suburbia in '92 I'm a country gal, so you can see my bias.

yeah, same as Adrienne --- Columbia Maryland is right between DC and Baltimore off of I95... very crowded and VERY expensive. (If you want a house not attached to another house you're looking at half a million dollars or so.)

Thankfully when I was there, I did apartment living with roommate.

Ah but the secret is that some parts of Colorado aren't cold. (maybe compared to the equator) We have 60 degree days in January all the time.

I can recommend my old hometown of Charleston, SC.

But they have earthquakes and hurricanes...

Greenville, SC is on the rise. I also like Asheville, NC (and many other places in NC).
